The Veritas Cross Country season that began in August culminated with our first VISAA State Championship meet, Friday, November 11th. Before stepping up to the starting line at Woodberry Forest, both the boys and girls had already experienced a successful season. The Boys earned the runner up championship at the Maymont Festival of Races XC Private School Division edged out by Calvert Hall, a large school sports program. The Girls, led by seventh grader Morgan Lewis, took home third place outscoring major programs such as Trinity and Collegiate. The following week, the Varsity runners traveled to Cary, NC where they competed in the American Independent School Championships with schools from as far as South Carolina and Tennessee. This time it was the girls who came home with runner up honors and personal records for each runner on a high quality course. The Boys put their top three runners under 17 minutes and the top five under 18 minutes, fulfilling a program goal set four seasons ago. In addition, they also brought home the championship. Veritas also had strong showings at the FUMA Middle School meet winning two divisions and a runner-up in the third. The Veritas Girls had an absolutely dominant performance at the Collegiate JV meet stacking eight runners in the top ten.

Veritas School capped a long and rewarding Cross Country season Friday at the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association State Cross Country Meet. There was plenty of drama going into the meet with the Girls team ranked closely with four other experienced programs. The Buys were heavy favorites, but with several late season meets cancelled, they were not as sharp as planned. Furthermore, sophomore staple, David Heide, suffered an accidental ankle injury less than 48 hours before. The guys stepped to a crowded starting line and got out well. Mitch Young was tasked with pushing the pace to help the team and executed the plan to perfection. At the two mile mark, the Veritas Boys began to swallow the fading leaders working their way into the top ten. The team was led by eighth grader, Miles Clikeman, finishing in second and closing fast on the leader. This was followed by Tripp Fitch in fifth, Cameron Francis—in his first season—finishing in ninth, and Nicholas Kontopanos in thirteenth to round out all state finishers. David Heide not only made it to the start but contributed to the team’s win finishing in fifth position on the team and sealing Veritas’ first state title in their first attempt.

The Girls were also one of the top ranked teams coming in but had a much “steeper hill to climb.” Led by a gutsy performance by Caroline Coggins, the Girls were able to threaten established programs for a fourth place finish out of over twenty programs. The surprise performance of the day was Christa Schuping’s 13th place finishing in 3rd position for the team. With young talent coming up to Varsity next year and without losing a single runner, the Girls will be tough to beat next year.

Thank you for your interest in Veritas! We are glad you are visiting our site. Allow me to give you a brief introduction to our school.

Veritas was founded in 1999 for the purpose of assisting parents in providing their children an academically rigorous classical and Christian education – an education that would cultivate wisdom, virtue, and eloquence in the heart and mind of students and would prepare them to engage the world with purpose and confidence.

Since our founding, Veritas has been steadily growing and maturing. We are pleased with our progress but also know the best is yet to come. We will continue working diligently to provide Richmond area families an opportunity for their children to receive the highest quality education in the context of a distinctively Christian community of faith. I like to say we are committed to “discipleship and scholarship without one compromising the other”.

If after visiting our site, you are interested in knowing more, or actually experiencing Veritas first-hand, please call or come visit. We would love to meet you!

Sincerely,

Tuesday Tours: These tours will include a brief introduction to the school mission and philosophy. You will then have the opportunity to see first hand what a classical, Christian education looks like as you step inside each classroom. Travel back in time to the deserts of Egypt as you join the second grade class for a history lesson. Sing along with our kindergarten students as they recite poetry, phonograms, and Bible verses. Join a stimulating classroom discussion about biology or medieval literature in the Upper School. There is so much to see, hear, and experience in these lively rooms full of eager students and passionate teachers.

We hope you will join us on the second or fourth Tuesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. Reserve your spot for the next tour by calling 804.272.9517 or emailing the Admissions Office at ggregory@veritasschool.com.
